  • Polishing
  • Protecting

Keeping it Simple

The Three areas of paint care

  • Every car needs to be waxed.
  • No wax product lasts forever.
  • Proper paint care requires 3 basic steps.

The Three (3) Basic Steps

Believe it or not, by following three steps of "How to Wax a Car", your cars paint will not only outlast your interest in your car, but it can look better than 98% of the cars on the road.

  1. Wash car weekly.
  2. Clay Bar paint as needed.
  3. Wax paint every 4-12 weeks.

Let's break down the individual steps for you and add some important additional helpful tips of "How to wax a car".

Washing Your Car

how to wax a car

One of the most helpful free auto detailing tips is for you to outsource the washing part of this assignment to the local car wash. This is the best way to buy back an hour or two of your time; take your car to the car wash!

Think about this for a moment:

  • Most people will consume an hour or more just washing the car.
  • Because most people consume this hour just to wash their car, they quit before any of the real fun begins...because now, you are really, really tired.
  • Car washing is grunt work; tiring, laborious, boring.
  • Detailing is the real fun.

So find yourself a good car wash and outsource this part of the process. After all, isn't your time worth the $10.00 you will spend at the car wash?

Time for the Clay Bar

If you have never heard of the clay bar process of paint care, it is about time! This amazing little wonder has saved us professional auto detailers countless hours of time, and is a critical part of the process of paint care.

The Clay Bar Process

  • Removes contaminates from paint that normal washing and waxing doesn't remove.
  • Requires periodic use to keep paint clean and smooth.

The clay bar is a palm sized, slab of firm putty that is used by rubbing back and forth across the paint. It is used in conjunction with some form of lubricant that is usually supplied with the clay bar when purchased.

I suggest you go to my page on clay bars to educate yourself on this amzing littel wonder of a tool.

Waxing

Just like any subject of life, so much bad information gets circulated around, and "How to Wax a Car" is no exception. So I am going to lay out the basics and work down from there:

Car waxes come in three forms:

  • Paste.
  • Liquid.
  • Spray.

Everything comes with pros and cons. Each form of auto wax has its benefits, just as each brand of wax has its benefits. So let me lay out information to help guide you around this confusing area of car detailing.

  • Paste waxes offer the best "hiding" and durability.
  • Paste waxes are also the hardest to work with.
  • No wax is capable of being 100% carnauba; carnauba is unusable in its natural state and must be processed with other chemicals to make usable.
  • All waxes will be a combination of synthetic and natural ingredients.
  • I believe that a good spray wax offers the winning combination of benefits.

Modern day advances in waxes has made them so incredibly easy to use, there is almost no excuse of not waxing your car anymore. No longer do the days of spending an entire Saturday afternoon waxing your car exist. With good spray wax, you can wax your car in a fraction of the time it took prior to these advances in chemical engineering.

After reading this "How to Wax a Car" page, I suggest you visit my auto wax reviews page to see what I have to say about the different brands of car waxes.

Now that you understand the processes of proper paint care, by following these simple tips, you will:
  • Maintain the health of your cars paint.
  • Maintain the resale value.
  • Keep your car looking its best.

I have simplified this area by compiling a list of products I personally recommend in the column to the right. These products will produce professional results, and make your ride shine!

If you are new to micro fiber, you are in for a big treat! These amazing wonders have completely replaced the ageless staple of baby diapers as the universally accepted tool for wax removal. Water Sprite Chamois

The exact chamois I have used professionally for over twenty years; still the best! I like this over-sized version that I cut in half; one half is reserved for freshly washed cars, the other half for dirtier jobs like wiping door jambs.
