Leather Car Seat Care

Leather car upholstery is more common today then ever. The topic of leather car seat care is an area of car care, that is filled with more bad information and misrepresentation than most people realize. Between all the misrepresentation of marketing, and all the bad information that is continually repeated, it is no wonder people such as yourself are a little unsure as to where to start, or what to do.

  • I heard that it is bad to clean your car leather.
  • I heard that using leather conditioner is not necessary.
  • I heard that cloth upholstery was better than leather.

I can't speak for you, but whenever I hear someone start off by saying "I heard ....", I am going to be pretty skeptical of anything that follows. We need to spend more time unlearning the bad information, rather than trying to learn any new information. With the help of the Internet, bad information is ever more pervasive. Let me help clear up some false and bogus information regarding leather car seat care.

Some Basic Misconceptions

  • We generally get what we pay for; pay more money when buying a car, get better leather.
  • You can't change bad leather into good leather by adding more and more leather conditioner.
  • When a car is advertised as coming with "leather seating surfaces", take this literally, 'cause that is all you are getting in the way of leather; surfaces only.

As consumers, we have been mislead to believe that leather is this exotic material, full of mystery that requires special care and consideration. And the car care industry only adds to the confusion by trying to out do each other through hyped-up and misleading marketing.

We have been enabled to the point of inaction on our part, and therefore we live with dirty leather that ages prematurely out of neglect. The big injustice is that leather car seat care is neither complicated or difficult.

Cleaning Leather Car Seats

There are two big tips I could tell you regarding leather car seat care:

  1. Leather is not as fragile as we have been lead to believe.
  2. Cleaning your leather, versus conditioning it, is the biggest factor in preserving your cars leather.

My experience has shown that people tend to get fixated on conditioning their cars leather seating, and neglect the critical part of cleaning the leather first. At the hands of advertising and marketing, leather has been raised to some kind of elite status shrouded in mystery and novelty; we are enamored to the point of dysfunction.

I have seen many situations firsthand in the world of car detailing, where people will continually apply layer after layer of leather conditioners/dressings to their car leather. Because they neglect the most important part of cleaning, they actually create the exact opposite. After time, a thick layer of dirt and conditioner/dressings has built up, that now prematurely ages their leather due to the dirty build-up.

Words from the Expert

Let me add some additional words of leather car seat care that might be of interest to you.

  • I have care leather that I have personally taken care of for over ten years, and have never once used any form of leather conditioners or dressings; the leather looks amazing.
  • I never use leather conditioners in my professional business of auto detailing.
  • Keeping leather clean is in fact the most important part of proper car leather care.
  • I clean my customers leather once a month as on-going maintenance; their leather looks amazing day after day, year after year.

As people, we are on information overload. It is hard to know who to trust as there are many pushing their agenda through misleading advertising, and there are many willing to simply repeat unverified information. I too have difficulty deciphering the facts and I have been in the business over twenty years.

I have spent a small fortune testing product after product, all in order to deliver the best service and results to my customers. The best I can do is call it like I see it; something only firsthand experience can shown.

I have been taught by professionals within the car leather care industry, that current leathers are finished with protection that prevents leather conditioners from even penetrating past the surface. This has been confirmed by myself in working with so many car leathers, over so many years.

porsche cleaning leather car seatsThis has also been confirmed recently by one of my acquaintances; many people who casually know me have learned to come to me for resources and information regarding car care. This person had spent a couple hours the week before cleaning and conditioning his leather within his '09 BMW. He then went on to tell how the next day, there was a whitish layer covering all the very surfaces he had worked on. He told me that he had used a Meguiars leather conditioner. My opinion was that due to the leathers inability to absorb the conditioners, it had merely dried on the surface. Needless to say, he spent some additional hours removing the leather conditioner; just keep it clean folks.

I hope this leather car seat care page has helped to give you a working foundation of proper leather care for you cars interior. Good luck!

It's a jungle out there; treat accordingly."
