Mothers Clay Bar

best auto detailing tips

Mothers clay bar is just one of the many choices of quality detaling clay and clay bar kits available. Detailing clay is one of the advances in cosmetic car care that has significant impact on the results now available to not only professionals, but consumers alike. This putty like substance now puts professional results in the hands of everyday consumers, and while the list of available choices continues to grow, Mothers remains as a leader with their quality product. Personally I started out using Mothers products on my very first car in what seems like a hundred years ago! I am still a big fan of their products and continue to recommend them for a few specific reasons:

  • Their products produce superior results.
  • I use them myself.
  • They are easy to get.

Darren's Remarks

When it comes to car care, detailing clay is not an area you need to over-think. While there are differences to the many clay bars available, they are all going to perform for you. I have laid out numerous choices for you over in the column at the right and they represent a good blend from the different manufacturers. The two from Meguiar's and Mothers represent the lower end of the cost scale, while the Pinnacle and Wolfgang are geared more for people who like the prestige of higher end products. While they will all perform for you, as the saying goes, you generally get what you pay for, so there are some added benefits for shopping one of the more expensive products.

The Mothers Clay Bar would definitely be categorized as a light duty grade, and certainly appropriate for any "Driveway Detailer" or "Weekend Warrior" looking to take care of their personal cars. As far as using this in the professional world of car detailiing where you are doing many. many cars during a single week, it may not stand up to that kind of repeated use. But anyone looking to simply take care of their single car can expect this kit to last a few years of use. After the initial cleaning with the Mothers clay bar, maintenance will be minimal if kept up on a regular basis. In my area of the world, I can expect to keep a car silky smooth by using the clay bar every other month. Since I have only detailed in the southern California area, I have nothing to compare it to, but around here, the pollution in the air does vary from city to city. Any of the beach communities require a little more frequent use; almost on a monthly basis.

During colder temperatures, clay bars in general tend to become stiff and rigid when trying to mold them for use in tight crevices and character lines of the body work of cars. Because the single individual Mothers clay bar is on the smaller side as compared to the kits that come with a single larger piece of clay, it is easier to use in colder temperatures.

This particular package from Mothers includes two smallish bars; unless your hands are the size of a leprechaun, I found them a bit too small. I simply molded the two of them together and created a much more useful and substantial bar that I personally prefer. This is just a matter of personal preference.

I suppose for those that are overly concerned with the clay becoming embedded with dirt early on, it would be nice to have an extra bar in the kit. I find that most people become overly concerned with their bars the moment they show signs of dirt. Once again, this is simply people over-thinking the moment and you needn't get overly hung up on the bar getting dirty and needing to be swapped out early on. I have used bars for years as they continue to get dirtier and dirtier.

Darren's Closing Tips

If you are already a big fan of Mothers than this moment is a no-brainer as I would go with the clay bar kit from Mothers. If you are new to the world of detailing clay, any of the kits over in the right hand column will produce excellent results for you. If you are a name brand kind of guy or gal, then Pinnacle and Wolfgang will be your ticket. If you are on more of a budget, then Mothers clay bar or the one from Meguair's will be your choice. Regardless though, you will need to get yourself o quality clay bar and use it. You will be amazed at the end result and I guarantee, it will put a smile across your face as you feel your silky smooth paint after claying and waxing your cars paint for the first time!

P.S. While you are at it, pick yourself up one of the Water Sprite chamois' listed at the bottom over at the right, and follow along with the tip I suggest for use with the clay bar and this quality chamois!

Clay Bar Picks

Any professional detailer knows the importance of the clay bar. This little piece of clay wonder removes surface contaminates from your cars' paint and leaves it smooth as glass. I still get a kick out of intrusting someone for the first time as they use a quality clay bar like the ones below, and see first hand the truly professional results they are able to get the first time around! People ask me professionally all the time what I recommend for their cars paint. I tell them to start with just two items before they consider anything else: The clay bar and some quality paste wax. People are constantly amazed at the level of results these two items alone are able to provide and often, never go any further than these two items. So shop any of the clay bar kits below, and see how easy it is to produce a silky smooth shine to your car yourself!

(see the end of this list for one of my professional time saving tips!)

Meguiar's Professional Clay

If you are looking to purchase a clay bar without the kit itself, the product from Meguiar's is an excellent choice! Pinnacle Clay Bar Kit

I haven't personally tried the clay bar kit from Pinnacle. Since the above mentioned clay bars are more than qualified for the job, I have limited my reviews to those above. If you are a fan of Pinnacle products, then you may want to go with their version of clay bar.

Water Sprite Chamois

Darren's Tip

Clay bar kits are a great way to sample a manufacturers clay bar and spray lubricant. If you are trying a particular kit for hte first time, you might just find you have found a new favorite when it comes to the spray detailer that comes with these kits. Once you have finished the spray lubricant, try this time saving technique developed by one of my past employees: simply use a wet chamois instead of the spray lubricant; this is a time saving technique I still use today. And since I am letting you in on this secret, I might as well let you in on another gem, and that is the Water Sprite chamois! Not all chamois' are created equal, and you are missing out if you think so! This is the exact chamois I use professionally and have not switched in twenty years! Simply use a wet chamois by placing the clay bar underneath as you rub across the paintwork of your car. The damp chamois automatically wets the paint surface to keep the clay from sticking. Not only do you save time by not having to spray the spray lubricant repeatedly, but you will also save on your spray detailer! I usually cut this over-sized chamois in half from the beginning which means you are really get two chamois' for the price of one!
