Selling Used Car Tips:
tips from an expert

As an expert of cosmetic car care, I am often asked what "selling used car" tips I can offer. Whether I want to sell my used car, or you want to sell your used car, there are strategies that are both simple an straight forward that anyone can do to get that car sold.

Steps to Getting the Sale

When the time comes to "sell used car", many people will oversimplify the moment and think that if they simply put an add out, they will come...and buy. Unfortunately, there is a few more steps to the process than that:lexus selling used car

  • Write compelling ad.
  • Add curb appeal.
  • Make the sale.

While many people understand the importance of making a good impression when it comes selling selling themselves, whether this be for a first date or a job interview, they fail to apply the same psychology when it comes to selling used car for themselves. Think how absurd the following would be to consider:

  • Showing up to a job interview unshaven, not showered, and wearing dirty clothes?
  • Showing up to a first date with bad breathe, dirty hair, and dirty clothes?

Presentation is King

The above mentioned might sound absurd to you, but often people make these same mistakes when trying to sell used car. What we nee here are some strategies to create as much curb appeal, with as little effort and cost as possible; and this is where I can help.

We Buy With Emotion

As humans, we make purchases based on emotion, then rationalize the purchase with our heads. We need to use this knowledge to our favor by creating a positive emotional response to our cars. This biggest way we can do this is the same way you close the deal on a first date; you make yourself as irresistible as possible.

Selling Used Car Check List

The "Absolutely Must Do" list:
(No exception here; do them all!)
selling used car

  • Wash car
  • Vacuum car
  • Remove all junk from car
  • Clean windows inside and out

The "I Really Should Be Selling Used Car" list

After completing the list from above, do following:

  1. Use clay bar to make your car silky smooth prior to the next step of waxing.
  2. Wax your car-This page outlines the exact steps of how to wax your car.
  3. Clean wheels.
  4. Dress the tires with tire dressing.
  5. Apply tire dressing into the wheel wells.(this will make your wheel wells look nice and black.)
  6. Remove any form of stickers/parking tags/etc. from anywhere on your car;inside or out. (People don't want your identity enhancements; remember, this is hopefully going to be their car soon.)

The "I Really Have to Sell My Used Car" list

Do all the previous how to sell used car tips, and these additional tips that will really help you get the "details" right, and add some true positive emotional response:

  • Steam clean or degrease your engine.
  • Use some rubbing compound or aggressive polish to buff off any bumper scuffs, door ding marks, misc. markings on your paint. (either do this before you wax, or touch up with your wax after doing this additional step.)
  • Have a professional paintless dent remover remove all those annoying dings in the sides of your car.
  • Get some car touch-up paint and fill in the major chips on the front end of your car-you will think this is pointless and tedious work, but trust me on this, it will make an overall difference when you stand back.
  • Use a mixture of Simple Green and water, along with a scrub brush for some car upholstery cleaning tips to beautify your cars interior.
  • Use "Febreze" fabric freshener liberally in the inside of your car; nobody wants a car to smell like the last person that owned it. Get the Febreze brand freshener that has the antimicrobial ingredients in it. They make different versions, so read the label.
  • If your seat or seats are really bad, consider some "cheap" seat covers.
  • If your dash has some major cracks, buy a dash cover.

Don't Underestimate Your Efforts

Presentation really is king, and you never get a second chance to make a first impression; we've all heard the cliche's. The fact is that cliche's exists for a reason; because generally speaking, they are true. So with these selling used car tips in hand, take measures to enhance the curb appeal of your used car and get the emotional triggers pulled in your favor by spending some quality time with your car, doing some effective efforts.
